IEA (2021), World Energy Outlook 2021, IEA, Paris https://www.iea.org/reports/world-energy-outlook-2021

Against the backdrop of turbulent markets and a crucial meeting of the COP26 conference on climate change in Glasgow, the 2021 World Energy Outlook (WEO) provides an indispensable guide to the opportunities, benefits and risks ahead at this vital moment for clean energy transitions. The WEO is the energy world’s most authoritative source of analysis and projections. This flagship publication of the IEA has appeared every year since 1998. Its objective data and dispassionate analysis provide critical insights into global energy supply and demand in different scenarios and the implications for energy security, climate targets and economic development.

"The social and economic benefits of accelerating clean energy transitions are huge, and the costs of inaction are immense."

The World Energy Outlook makes use of a scenario approach to examine future energy trends relying on the WEM. For the World Energy Outlook 2021 (WEO-2021), four scenarios were modelled: the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE), the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS), the Stated Policies Scenario (STEPS), and the Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS).

The full World Energy Outlook 2021 report (PDF) is provided free of charge. In addition, we are also providing a WEO-2021 Free Dataset that includes global data for all scenarios (SDS, APS, STEPS, NZE) and selected data for key regions and countries.
